Flocculants – NATPOL emulsified liquid polymers
The NATPOL series is based on special emulsified liquid polymers with different molecular weights and charge densities. These products are used in wastewater and sludge from several industrial sectors and offer a customised
solution in each case.
The flocculants in the NATPOL series act as coadjutants in the formation of flocs, generally in physicochemical wastewater treatment systems, and as water separation agents in sludge, improving sludge dehydration processes in centrifuges and screw thickeners, among others.
The molecular weight of these polymers favours the crosslinking processes of suspended solids through the polymer chain. On the other hand, different charge densities allow the selection of the optimal treatment that efficiently neutralises the counterions present in the wastewater.
The molecular weight of these polymers aids the binding of suspended solids into larger and denser flocs. In addition, the different charge densities of the polymers allow the selection of the optimal treatment. This significantly improves the effectiveness of the flocculation and separation process, contributing to better water clarification and treatment.
SUITABLE PRODUCTS FOR WATER TREATMENT AND SLUDGE DEWATERING
The formation of flocs of different density than water allows the separation of solids and other pollutants present in the inlet water (i) by decantation in those processes in which the density of the flocs is greater than water (ii) and by flotation for industrial influent water with a high content of oils and fats, hydrocarbons or proteins… where the simplest way is to achieve the elimination of solids by favouring their tendency and removing them from the top layer of the DAF unit.
In this application we will generally use anionic products, especially for decantation processes with high mineral content in the inlet water, and linear cationic flocculants when the separation is carried out by flotation.
In sludge dewatering processes using a centrifuge, screw thickener or compactor, the selection of flocculant will be made with a based on getting a resistant floc that will resist the torsional forces to which it will be subjected, and which will allow the removal of high quality water. Cationic products with a high ionic charge and molecular weight and with a significant degree of cross-linking in their structure should be chosen.
NATPOL APPLICATION
NATPOL products differ from other liquid flocculants on the market in that they substantially reduce the content of organic solvents and surfactants. Their capacity to dissolve in water during preparation is remarkably higher, requiring a much shorter reaction time and offering the possibility of preparing more concentrated aqueous solutions with a shorter maturation time.
This reduction of organic solvents in its formulation makes it a more environmentally friendly product. In terms of application, NATPOL are anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes, linear or cross-linked, which are presented in a liquid state and are dosed after their aqueous dissolution
(0.2 – 1.0%).
The NATPOL range includes products of different viscosities that can be adapted to the preparation equipment of each installation, making changes in pumping and dosing equipment unnecessary.
ADVANTAGES of NATPOL PRODUCTS over STANDARD EMULSIONS
- Substantial reduction of solvent and organic surfactant content.
- Reduction of reaction time.
- Concentrations up to 1% are possible.
- Reduced maturation time.
- More environmentally friendly product as it reduces the content of organic solvents.
VISCOSITY vs CONCENTRATION
The graph shows that the viscosity value increases more with the standard emulsion than with the NATPOL series products for the same preparation concentrations.
These differences are more evident when the water used in the preparation is of poorer quality.
